Presenting: The Gallusviertel in Frankfurt am Main

Gallus, or Gallusviertel, is a lively district in Frankfurt am Main. Situated just west of Frankfurt Central Station, it’s bordered by the railway tracks to the south, the Frankfurt Trade Fair Centre to the north and stretches out to the A5 motorway in the west. The heart of the district is Galluswarte, with its own S-Bahn station bearing the same name.

Galluswarte: Over 600 Years of Frankfurt History

The Galluswarte is a historic watchtower that’s been standing since the 14th century, originally built as part of Frankfurt’s city defences. In 1414, the old wooden tower was replaced with the stone structure you can still see today, meaning it’s been here for 610 years. Up until the early 20th century, it was known as Galgenwarte, named after the Galgenfeld area to the east, where the main railway station now stands.

To protect the growing city, Frankfurt’s Landwehr had several lookout towers, each equipped with an armoury and accommodation for guards. When danger was near, signals like flags by day and fires by night would alert the townsfolk, and reinforcements from nearby forts would be summoned. Today, only three of these defence towers remain, alongside the historic Galluswarte.

If you’re staying at a&o Hostel Frankfurt Galluswarte, you’re just 100 metres from the tower, which is tucked behind the S-Bahn bridge. From the main station, hop on the S5 or S6 to Galluswarte S-Bahn station - it’s just a two-minute ride. Alternatively, tram lines 11, 14, or 21 will get you there in about seven minutes, or you can enjoy a 20-minute stroll along the 1.4-kilometre route. So, as you can see, the Galluswarte and a&o Hostels are easy to find!

Messe Frankfurt: A Driving Force in the Economy

Messe Frankfurt is one of the world's largest trade fair organisers and a key player in the global event industry. With over 800 years of history, it’s become a major hub for trade and innovation. The exhibition grounds in Frankfurt span a whopping 592,000 square metres, offering 372,000 square metres of exhibition space. The most famous events include the Frankfurt Book Fair and Ambiente, which draw hundreds of thousands of visitors and exhibitors from all corners of the globe, highlighting Messe Frankfurt's international significance.

What sets Messe Frankfurt apart is not just its size and diversity but also its modern infrastructure and excellent transport links. Centrally located in Frankfurt, it’s close to the main railway station and the airport, making it easy for international visitors to get to the fair. Messe Frankfurt is also committed to sustainability and innovation, using eco-friendly technologies and processes to keep its environmental impact low. It’s more than just a place for trade and innovation - it’s a cultural meeting point where people from all over the world come together to exchange ideas.

a&o Hostel Frankfurt Galluswarte is just about a kilometre from the exhibition grounds, making it an easy walk or a quick S-Bahn ride (just one stop). Start your busy day with an optional breakfast at a&o, offering the ideal boost to keep you going.
