The new ETA procedure at a glance
What is the ETA procedure?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is an electronic pre-approval system for travellers wishing to enter the UK without a visa. With this procedure, British authorities can record important information about travellers prior to departure, which simplifies and speeds up security checks on entry.
Who needs an ETA?
Travellers who have previously entered the UK without a visa will have to apply for an ETA from April. The following groups are affected:
- Tourists and business travellers: All persons wishing to enter the UK without a visa must have a valid ETA.
- Exceptions: British citizens, holders of diplomatic or service passports and people who already have a valid visa are generally exempt from the ETA requirement.
How do I apply for an ETA?
The ETA application is completed entirely online. The process is user-friendly and comprises the following steps:
Complete the online application:
- Visit the official ETA website and enter your personal details. This includes your full name, date of birth and passport number.
- Enter travel details: You will need to provide details of your journey, planned arrival date and address of stay in the UK if applicable.
- Have documents ready: A valid passport is a requirement. In some cases, a recent passport photo may also be required.
- Payment: The processing fee will be debited during the application process by credit card or another common online payment service.
- Wait for confirmation: Once you have successfully applied, you will receive an electronic confirmation that you can show when you enter the country.
What documents and information are required?
In order to complete the ETA application correctly, you should have the following documents and information to hand:
- Valid passport: Make sure your passports are valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK.
- Personal details: Full names, dates of birth, nationality and contact details.
- Travelling dates: Details of the planned date of entry, the (first) address of stay and return date if applicable.
- Means of payment: A valid credit card or other electronic proof of payment to pay the ETA fee.
What are the costs?
The processing fee for the ETA is GBP 10 per person.
This fee may vary slightly depending on additional options or in special cases. It is advisable to check the current information on the official ETA website before applying.
Tips for a smooth application
- Apply in good time: Submit your application a few weeks before your planned trip to avoid any queries or delays.
- Careful checking: Check all data entered carefully to avoid errors that could lead to problems when entering the country.
- Official sources of information: Rely solely on the official website and trusted sources of information to keep up to date with any changes or new requirements.
