In this guide, we’ll take you through some of the most popular and beautiful Christmas markets in the German capital.
The Christmas market in front of Berlin's Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall) is a festive wonderland offering everything from a Ferris wheel and ice skating to mulled wine and a charming chain carousel. Situated next to St. Mary’s Church, this market has a fantastic location under the TV Tower, making it a hit with both tourists and locals alike. Be sure to catch the magical moment when Father Christmas flies overhead in his sleigh – three times a day at 16:30, 18:30, and 20:30. From November 25th to December 30th, 2024, you can enjoy this nostalgic market in the heart of Berlin.

Located on Breitscheidplatz in the heart of City-West, the Christmas market by the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is perfect for those seeking a mix of tradition and tranquillity. Alongside classic mulled wine and *Feuerzangenbowle* (a fiery punch), you can indulge in a variety of sweet and savoury treats. This market, running from November 24th to January 5th, 2025, is a lovely spot to unwind and enjoy the festive atmosphere of Berlin’s City-West.
How to get there: S+U Zoologischer Garten (S3, S5, S7, S9, U2, U9) or U Kurfürstendamm (U1, U9)
For a traditional and elegant experience, head to the Christmas market at the State Opera, which will take place on Bebelplatz this year due to ongoing construction at Gendarmenmarkt. This market focuses on authentic handicrafts and festive treats like roasted almonds and mulled wine. If you’re looking for warmth, you can dine in one of the enclosed huts, though you might miss the stunning historical backdrop of the State Opera House, Humboldt University, and St Hedwig’s Cathedral. From November 25th to December 29th, 2024, the market at Charlottenburg Palace will immerse you in a nostalgic atmosphere. With a focus on natural materials, you’ll find handmade jewellery, wooden ornaments, and plenty of local culinary delights. The palace itself makes for a breathtaking backdrop, giving this market a royal touch.

For a bit of a Scandinavian twist, check out the Lucia Christmas market at the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg. Running from November 25th to December 22nd, 2024, this charming market brings a touch of Nordic winter magic with glögg (mulled wine) and treats like Köttbullar (Swedish meatballs) and elk sausages. The romantic atmosphere, with its twinkling lights and warm drinks, makes this market a cosy escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

From November 16th to December 22nd, 2024, the Heissa Holzmarkt winter market, located just 900 metres from a&o Hostel Berlin Mitte, offers a unique and creative take on Christmas shopping. The market is as colourful and original as the Holzmarkt artist project itself, featuring sustainable, fair-trade gifts like handmade soap, ceramics, and self-designed jewellery. There’s also plenty of food and drink, so it’s a great spot to warm up and enjoy some festive cheer.
The historic RAW site in Friedrichshain hosts a charming Christmas market from November 14th to December 22nd, 2024, just 1.2 km from a&o Hostel Berlin Friedrichshain. Here, you can try the traditional Feuerzangenbowle (a mulled wine with a twist) or hot honey wine, while browsing handmade crafts for a special souvenir. This market has a relaxed, authentic vibe and is perfect for an afternoon out.
For a more lively experience, head to the ‘Lichtenberger Winterzeit’ Christmas carnival on Landsberger Allee, running from November 1st to December 28th, 2024. Located just 1.1 km from a&o Hostel Berlin Kolumbus, this market is all about fun and excitement, with rides like rollercoasters, a Ferris wheel, and merry-go-rounds.
