Take the Train to Antwerp and Enjoy the Journey

Antwerp is a must-visit destination, no matter the season! This vibrant Belgian city is packed with attractions, making it easy to fill several days with exciting experiences. And if you're looking for an affordable, comfortable place to stay, a&o Hostel Antwerpen Centraal is just the ticket. Conveniently located right across from Antwerp Central Station, it’s the perfect base to explore the city with ease.

Travelling to Antwerp by train isn’t just stress-free – it’s also an eco-friendly alternative to driving or flying. While Antwerp does have an international airport, its flights are limited to a few destinations like Málaga, Alicante, Tenerife and Innsbruck. For more options, Brussels and Amsterdam airports are nearby, offering excellent train connections:

  • Amsterdam Schiphol Airport: Reach Antwerp in just 75 minutes on a direct Eurocity train.
  • Brussels Zaventem Airport: Arrive in Antwerp in only 30 minutes on a direct IC or Eurocity train.

Planning a bigger trip? Start or stop at one of these nearby a&o Hostels along the way:

  • Aachen: A 105-minute train ride to Antwerp.
  • Köln: Reach Antwerp in just 145 minutes by train.
  • Rotterdam: A quick 45-minute direct train ride to Antwerp.

Great Day Trips from Antwerp: Explore Flanders

Flanders, the northern part of Belgium, is home to Flemish – a Dutch dialect – while the southern region of Wallonia is French-speaking. Many of Belgium’s most beautiful cities are in Flanders, making it a must for your itinerary.

Brussels: Just 40 Minutes Away

The Belgian capital is a city of contrasts, blending modern life with historical charm. Begin at the stunning Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and admire the Gothic Town Hall and its surrounding guild houses. Snap a photo of Manneken Pis, Brussels’ quirky mascot, and visit the Magritte Museum if you’re an art lover. Don’t miss the Atomium, an architectural marvel offering panoramic views. For comic fans, the Comic Strip Route is a delightful way to explore the city.

Leuven: 45 Minutes from Antwerp

Leuven is a lively university town bursting with charm. The Grote Markt is the heart of the city, featuring the ornate Gothic Town Hall and St. Peter’s Church, which houses Dirk Bouts’ famous Last Supper. Wander through the peaceful Groot Begijnhof, a medieval quarter that’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beer enthusiasts will be thrilled – Leuven is the birthplace of Stella Artois, with plenty of breweries offering tours and tastings.

Ghent: Just an Hour Away

Ghent offers a blend of historic elegance and youthful energy. Walk along the scenic Graslei and Korenlei, enjoy a boat trip, or visit St. Bavo’s Cathedral to marvel at the world-famous Ghent Altarpiece. History buffs will enjoy the Castle of the Counts, while art lovers can explore contemporary works at the MSK and SMAK museums. At night, the city’s beautifully illuminated buildings create a magical atmosphere.

Bruges: 90 Minutes by Train

Known as the “Venice of the North,” Bruges enchants with its romantic canals and medieval architecture. Climb the Belfry for panoramic views, stroll through the tranquil Beguinage, or relax in Minnewaterpark. Don’t miss a canal boat ride for a unique perspective of the city. Foodies and beer lovers will enjoy Bruges’ famous chocolates and breweries like De Halve Maan.

Discover Antwerp in Winter

Visiting Antwerp during the holiday season? You’re in for a treat! The city’s Christmas markets run until early January, bringing festive cheer to every corner. Ride the Ferris wheel on Steenplein, skate on the ice rink at Groenplaats, or try the giant slide at Koningin Astridplein. Snack on delicious treats at the market stalls on Grote Markt – there’s something to suit every craving.

Even after Christmas, the markets stay open, making Antwerp a perfect spot to ring in the New Year with a spectacular fireworks display. After the celebrations, hop on a bus or train back to a&o Hostel Antwerpen Centraal and relax in a warm, comfy bed – the perfect way to end a magical day.
