The history of the a&o Hotel in Brighton dates back to 1771, when the Royal York manor house was built. By 1819, it had been transformed into a hotel, attracting notable visitors like the writer Charles Dickens, who gave a reading of his novel "David Copperfield" there in 1860. After serving as an office building for a period, it was restored as a hotel in 2006 and later converted into a youth hostel in 2014. In summer 2024, the a&o Brighton Palace Pier will reopen as a modern hotel and hostel, offering affordable private and multi-bed rooms in an unbeatable location.

How to get to the a&o Brighton Palace Pier

From Brighton train station:

You have two straightforward options to reach us.

The first option is to take a leisurely 15-minute walk. Exit through the main portal of the station and continue straight ahead on Queens Road for 600 metres. When you reach the clock tower, a notable landmark, turn left onto North Street and follow it for another 500 metres until you reach the Old Steine Gardens. Turn right here, and after 100 metres on the left-hand bend, you'll find the a&o Brighton Palace Pier.

Alternatively, buses depart frequently from the station. Buses 7 and 12 run particularly frequently, stopping at North Street (Stop C). From there, it's just a 250-metre walk to the a&o Brighton Palace Pier. Walk straight ahead towards Old Steine Gardens, turn right, and follow the left-hand bend towards the pier. You'll arrive in no time.

From the airports in and around London:
  • London Gatwick: The National Express 025 bus will get you to a&o Brighton Palace Pier in just 55 minutes, with Brighton Pool Valley Coach Station located directly behind the hotel. Alternatively, you can take the Gatwick Express or Thameslink to Brighton station.
  • London Heathrow (Terminal 5): Allow two hours for the National Express 025 bus to reach Brighton Pool Valley Coach Station, conveniently situated behind a&o Brighton Palace Pier.
  • London Luton: Start by taking a bus to Luton Airport Parkway, then switch to the Thameslink train bound for Brighton. This journey takes approximately two hours to Brighton station.
  • London Stansted: Take the Stansted Express to Tottenham Hale, change to the Victoria Line towards Victoria station, and from there catch the Gatwick Express to Brighton station. The total travel time is roughly two and a half hours.
